McNeil's Auto Body in Beverly, Massachusetts

I am a college student in Beverly Massachusetts. I took my car to McNeil's for two reasons: 1) standard oil change 2) trunk latch was not latching. I went to McNeil's because it was close to my off campus apartment and a roommate was told by a colleague at his internship that McNeil's was a good place to go. My face-to-face interaction with the staff was questionable. They were very friendly and helpful as we discussed my problem. But there were a couple of interactions between the staff and other individuals in the office that made me question the character of the people I was dealing with. I don't want to jump to conclusions or take what I heard out of context, so I will not be specific in what I witnessed in this review. However, my first impression of the staff was questionable. Without looking at the car, the staff quoted me a new trunk latch at $200, a price that was a little high compared to prices I had found elsewhere. The owner told me they could look around for used trunk latches that would be much cheaper. I agreed that it was a good idea for them to look for alternative options but only under the condition that they do not actually do any work before contacting me first to discuss it. Later that day I received a call from McNeil's reporting that they had finished the oil change and successfully fixed my trunk latch. The total cost was $95. The oil change was only $35. Whether $60 is a fair price to charge for fixing a trunk latch is up for debate, I suppose. But what is not questionable is dismissing simple requests like contacting the customer before doing extra work.
