No babies have been delivered at the Cambridge Birth Center, operated by Cambridge Health Alliance, since March of 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic put pressure on the hospital via staffing shortages and rising costs. Now, CHA is conducting a "comprehensive assessment" to determine the birth center's future, and is working with an outside consultant with expertise in midwifery and birth centers to address the "complex challenges involved with the operation of a birth center," according to a hospital spokesperson.
